I read the fine print and it said works will be judged on 50% originality 50% imagination (aren't those pretty similar criteria?). Is that true? So if someone draws stick figures doing something really funny or turned the KOF fighters into animals or something, it'll win over someone who drew a really great straightforward picture of Kyo in a generic fighting pose?

If that's true, the judging criteria needs to be changed. 60% skill, 30% style, 10% creativity.

On the Rules/Legal section, it says "Please refer to the online instructions regarding file format, file size, and other technical requirements for uploading artwork," but I can't find anything in that section or anywhere else on the site about it. Questions: If some other international enterprices like Fox broadcasting television can make contests for many countries at the same time, why is that Ignition couldn't make this contest for Europe and LatinAmerica as well? :confused: or at least for the whole continent? peopple in here are gonna get the game from you as well. Well Oswald is techincally a KOF Character. I mean the using characters not really an active character in the KOF universe but in the SNK roster like Rock Howard where in hes related to Terry but hasn't really been in any KOF game besides a cameo.

And unfortunately this contest is only for the US residents. And colored pictures always have a good chance of winning, but it depends, if you managed to pull out a badass black and white picture, that one can win also.

I dunno that website's manner of loading things seems to prevent people from fully loading the sections. it maye have to do something with the background. I feel websites shouldn't be so graphically packed with animations and stuff. it limits what browsers/pc/plug-ins etc. can view them.

I suppose for the sake of keeping everyone from spazzing out about whether people think they plagiarised someone elses work I'd better clarify. The (alleged) rip-off was a picture of Iori. AGAIN, I COULD BE WRONG ABOUT IT'S LEGITIMACY. So, I don't want anyone flaming me or trying to ban or disqualify me if I'm wrong. My entry is also (a very rad) Iori, so I'm a little apprehensive about the whole situation. If the picture is bogus, it needs to be 86'ed. If the picture is legit, some of us will have to step up our game.

there was one iori one that was a copy from a pretty famous one then the copies of shinkiro's kasumi from 96 i think, kyo from the 96 poster, it even explicitly states it has to be your own work. i think a lot of people just don't understand what that constitutes....

Well for the little amount I wrote is kinda hard to get the impression of someone age. That is for sure.

Anyways, your art is fine, no need to worry that yours been a plagiarism. Well you shouldn't had to worry about that in the first place, unless someone pointed your out as a plagiarism. It's very close. If anything, the artist responsible for the allegedly plagiarized painting is guilty of being uncreative in posing one of the most contortionistic characters in KoF - that's just bad form. It seems, however, that the work is all his own. There is, in fact, a screening process, by which a very professional looking depiction of Benimaru Nikaido was promptly removed. The Fan Art page is likely down due to the increased quantity of submissions, which are now too many for the Flash-heavy page to handle.

P.S.: Thank you all for making this interesting. It will be an honor to win against you.

Are you saying for those New Shinkiro looking Fanarts? For my understanding that is still plagiarism, because you are using it for winning or earning something. If it's for your own use then it's ok.

Hate to have to be the one to say it, but those shinkiro chibis might be original works. A side by side leaves me unconvinced in either direction. If they are manipulations of shinkiros work, while expertly done, there should be some consideration as to whether they're legitimate entries. Still though, it's impossible for us to know if they're 100% original works or not. I kind of hope they aren't.:D

no, you can easily tell they're shin's work, the chest and legs are flipped but the tie and other limbs aren't. you can mainly tell by all the folds of cloth and the strands of hair. it's identical just warped and parts are flipped but it's his without a doubt. with some filtering but it's his work... for example, i think the idea is alright but what really sets those entries apart is the proffesional quality and expert colouring and anatomy (mostly the anatomy of the clothes) and again those whether copied or manipulated are not his/hers... it's definitely photo manip... and kula is same deal... also from her 2000 entry by shinkiro...

Well it's the first time I see them and if they are original works, then a lot of the KOF community should know the artist and keep a watch for his original work. But I don't remember seen anything like that before in any KOF site I visited.

If it's a original work then that is badass, there is a talented person like Shinkiro in the US, but if it's a manipulation then that is not fair IMO.

I've read the whole disclaimer on the flash site and I've looked through this thread and I still haven't found these official rules describing the filetype and size requirements. Right now I have a piece that's pretty large so I know it will have to be resized. Once I know, I'll be able to submit it.

To answer plcraig, I drew my image at 400 dpi, but it's going to become 72 once you export it as a jpg anyways.

But I'm european, so I guess I don't have entered to the contest (in fact I'm not interested on it) but they have posted my draw :)

Copying the pose is not really plagiarism, but then again he keep the towel so it looks almost the same. Still it's a less nice looking art than the official, so it's not that he used it to make his art looks as good or better.

copying that drawing is, if he'd say gotten the pose from an actual model or even a photograph, then he's clear. for example i can't take your drawing, copy it while changing the outfit and call it mine. all the actual work of translating the real object into 2-d has already been done. i've been in many college courses where this type of thing has been adressed.
for private use it's okay i guess, but for things such as contests you're technically using other peoples work. hence they have the whole adendum about the work being wholey original, etc etc

Well its true, i used the Rival school artwork as a template. then altered the poses to my liking. I don't think i broke any of the contest rules. (Poses isn't considered plagiarism, if its just a color swap then it is).

As for the art style , its debatable (i tried Udon's art style since i really like it).

A lot of the entries have been copies of something else, it's sad really, and it annoys me D:

I mean, I've seen some pictures in the contest that are altered characters/versions from art books. I agree with Cutey_Storm, a drawing that's altered (Clothing, hair, ect) shouldn't be allowed in the contest (Especially since it's for personal gain $$$ Bling bling). Sure, for personal use that's fine, but it's not fair to the original artist or to the people who are actually TRYING in a contest, who are being submitting original work that they put time and effort in.

For the most part, I've seen some great work in the gallery. Keep it up folks.

Copying is part of art, they go hand to hand. You can search online about how many comic book covers and art take part of each other and change the rest, you will be surprise.

As long as the art is not exactly the same, then it's acceptable as I said before. But everyone has their own right to think how they want, but it's impossible to not copy something even in the most unconscious level since most of the stuff you draw are base on something already done by someone, well that is my point of view.

there a differenvce between an homage/emulation, and a copy. Mucha, is a famous example. Comics and fanartists love to draw in his style because it's unique and very graphic. They may even attempt the same pose. But they never draw from the original work. They always use their own references, and the end result may look similar, but his lines are his and theirs is theirs. It's one thing to "draw in the style of." But it IS plagerism, if you copy anything from an original piece of artwork. here are some examples of the correct way to do an homage or emulation.
*none of these are my images and i used them without permission. If the owner of the images would like me to remove them, just ask.

As a jerk, it seems to be my duty to say bluntly what Cutey Storm would not say. The contest rules state under "Judging" that "The judges will judge the Eligible Entries based on Originality (50%) and imagination (50%)." To reiterate with emphasis on the points in question: ORIGINALITY. And IMAGINATION(Not resolution or size. Not medium. Not accurate depiction of the characters). Thus, copying poses, settings, shadows, or flat out stealing another person's idea seem to be fair grounds for disqualification. Besides, it's one thing to give a nod to an artist whose style inspires you, and it's another to take something and make it yours simply because you can't think up better on your own. I'd hoped this would be more about showing off personal talent rather than merely trying to win.

Hey whats up guys, im working on a drawing, and IT DOES LOOK GOOD!!!, im really taking my time with this picture and putting a lot of details into this picture. Im using a mechanical pencil (0.5) and 3 different smudge sticks, thin, medium and large for the details. There're gonna be two different versions im going to enter, one which is the black and white drawing with no photoshop touch-ups and the 2nd is gonna be done in photoshop. I also will upload the video of me showing the drawing and doing updates to it:p:p:p:p, it will be on youtube soon.

yea lol, this is the first picture i drew since december 08. Im really paying attention to the rules of this contest, they said 50% creative, 50% original and design something in the spirit of king of fighters of the enviorments and characters. Most people are just entering just a "POSE" of the character....so i really dont see no creativity at all, but hey thats them.

Many of you are very talented, but there's not much complexity to your drawings. Just pretty, pretty pictures. It would be super if someone incoprorates more about the character than the simple fact that he/she wears a certain outfit, and strikes a pose. Fan art should be an attempt to fill in what's left to the imagination. So, imagine. Create.

Some questions asked earlier in the thread still go unanswered though...when I uploaded the picture, it never asked for my phone or address, but says we will be contacted by phone. Also, submission size and resolution I just sort-of guessed at to make sure they got a decent version...but if they're using the art for anything else they probably want hi-res, uncompressed file.

Anyhow, a lot of neat entries so far. I'm surprised since this contest has been pretty low profile compared to some of the other recent videogame art tie-ins.

The problem with the artist not being the one to realize the concept is the vast room for misinterpretation. For example, if a concept was presented as "Make Kasumi appear to care about Shingo," where "care" was intended to mean "display a level intimacy," but artist defines "care" differently, the result would be Kasumi reaching for Shingo's junk without making eye contact on a park bench while everyone watches from afar. Inappropriate.

Hey guys! I didn't find out that there was a forum here until yesterday.

I'm the same Yuki on the site who entered the Iori and Kyo piece (http://yukimu.deviantart.com/art/Fighting-Fire-With-Fire-131684165), although I was forced to crop it a bit due to the size when I submitted it to the KOF site. The one on my DA is nowhere near the original size, but it's just resized, not cropped.

Do you guys have art sites? I was bummed when I saw that there was no way of contacting the contestants until I found this forum.

Well, the site says it will announce the winners, so my guess is they are in the process of deciding which pieces are going to be selected.

I understand that the judges have their work cut out for them - there can be no absolute with art. However, as soon as a winner is notified, please announce it publicly on here; I don't care if you brag, this uncertainty is cancerous.

It is kind of odd that the site says winners will be notified by phone and nobody seems to have been prompted for a phone number at any point in the registration or submission process. Or maybe they did? At this point I don't remember. Aside from that, give them a break, they've got over 500 submissions to sift through.

Well, to be fair, almost half of those entries are not very original, and half of that half is comprised of characters and concepts stolen directly from other works and edited to look original, and half of the latter half is just a straight-up carbon copy of others' work. I just hope the judges can see that so it saves them some time, and finally give us closure.

What I really don't get is why the widget contest grand prize is a KOF cabinet and the fan art is only $1000. Don't get me wrong $1000 extra dollars is a lot of money, but it's nowhere near the cost of a viewlix cabinet.

I guess the widget contest is more universal, but I'm sure some of the entries on this site took quite a bit of time, may not quite merit a viewlix, but more merit then the broken widget game. IMO.

I agree with you on that. I was disappointed that I found out about the widget contest the day before it was going to end. There were over $10,000 in prizes, right? :T

I understand a contest like this would take awhile to judge for. Who knows how many judges there are on the panel and if they have disagreements on who should win what. Then, there's the problem of stolen art and drawing the line between blatant plagiarism and inspiration.

Sigh... I hope they announce something soon.

Asking for a timeframe in which to deliver the results may seem too demanding at this point. An update, however, seems perfectly reasonable, just so we're not so lost. And as far as drawing the line between inspiration and plagiarism, see Vanessa by Droux, and the Vanessa I'd posted a week before it. Let the line be drawn a little before that.

Perhaps the judges are reviewing all of the original King of Fighters works ever created, ever, in order to weed out the plagiarized entries. Because once they pick somebody, that's that. I imagine that to ensure due research and deliberation, we will have to wait a while longer until the results are announced on August 1, 2010.
